Introduction to fencing

Fencing is an antient symbol of power, glory & status. A sport with ancient rich history that travels far back medieval times in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. It is a martial art in weapon combat where a fencer tries to score hits on his/her opponents’ body with the use of either of these three weapons: A Foil, Sabre or Epee while avoiding hits.

History Of FencinG

Modern Fencing dates from the 15th century when civilians began carrying swords for the first time. Their weapon of choice was the rapier, which was essentially a thrusting weapon rather than a cutting sword something that could be used to solve matters of honor relatively quickly as it was said that whenever there was any dispute between individuals of noble status, they challenged themselves to a duel of fencing and whoever won any of these said duels was proclaimed winner. It was Introduced in Spain and then Italy before spreading across to Europe. Although both Italy and Germany both lay claims about its origin with German Fencing Masters organizing the first guilds in the 15th century.  The most notable being the Marxbruda of Frankfurt, formed in 1478.

Fencing at the Olympics

In 1896 when the first Modern Olympics premiered, fencing was one of the 5 sports featured at the maiden event. The other 4 sports being Athletics, Swimming, Gymnastics & Cycling and for over 100 years, fencing has been an iconic and integral part of the Olympic games featuring in every single games since inception.

Fencing as an Elite Sport

Fencing was considered the Sport of Kings because it was practiced by royalty and aristocrats which wasn’t just practiced for sport but also to learn to protect themselves should they end up in a duel. In modern times, fencing has often been associated with the cream de LA cream in society and whether we consider fencing as a form of enjoyment or a science of arms, the wealth of this sport as it is today emerged from antient study and thousandsof years old history of technical skills and a laudable record of the achievements of champions and Masters who force respect and above all maintain the values known through the sport.

All weapons in general, are based off the same basic set of rules. Although, each weapon has its own unique subset of rules which affects the speed, duration and styles of a fencing bout.
